GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY-CHINGOLA-ZAMBIA

HOSTED BY:
GLOBAL SCHOOL MISSIONS-CHINGOLA

APRIL 11 - 13, 2003
GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY

Dear Friends and Fellow Volunteers,
Welcome to the fourth annual Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), April 11-13, 2003! Now more than
ever, world circumstances call for the involvement of young people in building strong, representative civil societies,
and young people around the world are responding to that call. Last year, over 4 million youth carried out
thousands of service projects, youth forums, and celebrations in every region of the world, to highlight the
contributions young people make to their communities every day. From Afghanistan’s National Youth Roundtables
to Canada’s blood donation clinics; from Peru’s distribution of medical and school supplies to Togo’s public
awareness campaign about the threat of AIDS, youth demonstrated once again the power of youth service in
meeting critical needs.
And the youth service movement is growing: from 27 countries participating in 2000, to 150 in 2002 ,
hundreds of youth councils, nonprofit organizations, Ministries of Youth and Education, faith-based organizations,
and international agencies are partnering to show that youth are leaders and change makers – true resources in
their countries’ development process. This year, we again expect to involve millions of youth in close to 175
countries in GYSD. We encourage you to mobilize your group early in planning your project for GYSD, and to
use the event to involve greater media and government support for your group’s valuable work.
As an international public education campaign, Global Youth Service Day provides a framework for
collaborations and information exchange as well as materials and resources to support youth service; a campaign that is growing stronger year
after year to highlight the role of young people as powerful assets for their communities and for their countries.
We look forward to working with you to engage more youth in service, and strengthen their position as civic
Leaders.
Sincerely,
The International Coordinating Committee of GYSD
